Officials have confirmed that the H1N1 virus has been transmitted to a 13-year-old cat in Iowa.

The owners of the cats both had flu-like symptoms and then noticed that the cat became lethargic, uninterested in eating, and had difficulty breathing. Both veterinary and health officials have confirmed the presence of the H1N1 virus in the cat.

Experts stress that this is the first known instance of a pet contracting the illness from owners, but note that pet owners should use the same precautions with their pets as they do other people to prevent the spread of the flu.

They also note that there is no concern at this point that pets can spread the illness to people.
