Oh dear me. Why did I not jump on the How I Met Your Mother bandwagon sooner? For the past two or three years, I have heard about it and all my friends were demanding that I should watch it. And being the stubborn person I am, I did not acquiesce to their demands.
I watched one of the episodes a couple of months ago and said, "This is pretty funny, maybe I should invest my pop culture time into this." I watched a couple more and said, "Wow. Doogie has really grown up - and he's funny!" Then...I watched this:
After this, I was sold. Robin Sparkles (played flawlessly by Cobie Smulders, jelly bracelets and all) is definitely the queen of '80s Canadian pop (for something a little more softer and in-depth, listen to "Sandcastles in the Sand," a heart-wrenching ballad with musical accompaniment by Tiffany and a cameo by Alan Thicke.) And the Canadian accent just makes it even better (i.e. "aboot" and "soory"). Any show that can reincarnate the tacky charm of '80s fashion that is a blatant homage to Debbie Gibson's hey days is good in my book. But who does the better dance routine? Who wears that hideous hat better? Who has the better back up dancers/band? Robin or Debbie?
That is a tough call. I think "Let's Go to the Mall" gets major points for styling. There is a distinct point of view when it comes to the wardrobe. The acid was graffiti coat is stellar. There is a lot of thought in the clothes. As for Debbie, the styling leaves much to be desired. It looks like they just shopped at Miller's Outpost right before they started filming the video. Her vest and denim shorts combo ain't cuttin' it. Even so, that castle Debbie and her gang are dancing in front of is way fancier that Robin's mall setting. But Robin's band makes full use of musicality with the stylish keytar. You gotta love the keytar.
Yeah, yeah, yeah - I know, I am about three years behind - but I did have a point to posting all this. We are definitely seeing a re-trend of all the fashions showcased in the videos: the bright colors, the vests, the cinched waists and - GASP - the dreaded return to acid wash. Luckily, the 21st century uses these trends and gives them a modern twist - but I urge you to be wary when you put on those leggings with lace at the hems and your polka dotted bolero jacket. These trends died for a reason.
