Although apples are available all year round at grocery stores nationwide, fall is when apples get in the spotlight. With over 7,000 varieties, however, it’s easy to take incredible edible apple for granted.
Apples have many benefits. They have a longer shelf life than other fruits such as berries or peaches, are portable for picnics and school lunches, and are packed with antioxidants and dietary fiber that help prevent cancer and other diseases and promote weight loss.
Biting into a fresh apple is like no other fruit experience. The apple’s shape fits comfortably in your hand with natural indentations for your finger and thumb on either side. Your lips touch the smooth hard skin right before your teeth penetrate it with a pop. Little droplets of juice squirt inside your mouth and you bite off a disk-shaped piece. A crisp, wet sweetness explodes in your mouth as you continue to chew. And just when you think it’s all over, you take another luscious bite!
While pure and raw might be best for the apple purists, there are hundreds of ways to enjoy apples—apple cider, apple pie, apple cake, applesauce, apple crumble, apples and peanut butter, apples and cheese, baked apples, apples in a salad, etc.
