Cell phones ringing, text alerts beeping, kids crying, dogs barking, TV blasting. Sound familiar? In our technologically advanced culture, filled with stimuli to keep us going twenty-four hours a day, there is no encouragement for silence or reflection—unless you’re a three-year-old child in time-out! Being still, even for a moment, seems totally unnecessary and, even more so, detrimental to the constantly moving treadmill of life we run upon. It’s as if we’re afraid of losing our place if we stop.
While it’s technology that got us into this constant stimulus rush, it’s also technology that has proven the benefits of taking a break from it all through meditation. Advanced brain scan imaging has shown that meditation can rewire the neurons in the brain, with numerous life-improving benefits. It can help boost the immune system, reduce stress, extend life, slow disease, manage pain, increase mental clarity, enhance productivity, and alleviate depression . . . to name a few.
If you’re thinking you’re not the type to sit cross-legged on the floor, while burning incense and chanting “OM”, that’s fine. Traditional meditation doesn’t resonate with everyone. But how about taking a quiet walk through a park, caring for your garden, listening to soothing music or even just taking a few deep breaths while you concentrate on your inhale and exhale? Most of us could find someplace or something that allows us to quiet our mind.
Whether you have five minutes or fifty, meditation will renew and refresh your spirit this spring.
