And no, I'm not talking about those whose native language is not English. I received an email from a native born, English speaking student recently:

Ive began writing my paper today and i reached a stopping point
because Im not certain exactly which part of business you want the
compared and contrasted views about.  I didnt know if we were limited
to certain things or if were certain things u were looking to find.

Now the course that I'm teaching is "Introduction to Business". These students are preparing for a career in business. Here are my thoughts:

  1. If I correct the grammar and punctuation, do I risk alienating the student?
  2. If I criticize the student, do I risk hurting the students feelings?
  3. Is grammar outmoded, after all, I did understand what the student was saying.
  4. Do some keyboards not have the apostrophe key (')?

As a 60's kid, I've gotten used to their dress in class. It was my generation that started that. What is my responsibility to these students where preparing them for business is concerned?

To quote the King from "The King and I", "Is a puzzlement".

For more info: OK, What brought on this rant. I was rambling through the internet and came across this site. I wonder - how much of this is my fault?
