Contest at the Charmcity Skatepark Sept 14.2008

Skateboarding Contest?

Its so weird to me that we actually have skateboard contests? I am a firm believer that skateboarding is not a sport but more of an art form, a form of self expression. For some skateboardrers just cruising down the street on their longboard gives them the same amazing feeling  I get when a do a back-tail on my mini-ramp. Some people like the streets and the rails, others like transitions and bowls! It’s their choice. It’s their way to express themselves through skateboarding. There is no wrong way to do it! What sport can say that. Every sport has rules and regulations. We don’t have a rule book or national guidelines. Not one rule, that’s why skateboarding rules. You don’t need a team do it, all you need is you and your board!

You might ask yourself, why then do skateboarders even bother with holding contests. At a Charmcity contests  it’s not really about who wins, we don’t really put that much emphasis on the placings. We realize there are no strict rules, no standardized point system. We have to judge free expression, your creativity and style, and try to come up with a winner? Its always a tough call as to who a winner is because there really aren’t any losers in skateboarding! How can you have losers with no rules to be broken, no guidelines to be followed. If you did what you wanted, if you tried the tricks that felt comfortable to you, or maybe pushed yourself a little and went for the bigflip you have been practicing, then you won.”You won skateboarding!” Congratulations!

For me at Charmcity holding a contest is more about getting everyone together and having a good time! I try hard to make our contests as easy going as possible! We have four divisions, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Sponsored. I don’t have age limitations because your age doesn’t let me know if you just started skating or not. People of all ages get sponsored. It’s up to you to classify yourself. If your not honest that gets reflected in the score we give you. Even though it’s a competition we try to keep things positive. On Sunday September 14.2008 we are holding a contest at the Charmcity Skatepark, so come on down and join in the fun, or cheer some of the rippers on!
