The best camera to capture a great photo is the one you have with you. If you are a serious photographer looking for a nice little carry camera, the Canon G10 is a great choice. I carry this camera in a small handlebar bag on my bicycle with a nice little wrist strap for safety so that I am prepared when I stumble upon great photo opportunities. This little powerhouse has a nice feel in your hand along with a superb fit and finish. It reminds me of a rangefinder Nikon my dad brought back from Japan in the 70's.
Clearly marked, real metal knobs let you easily change ISO and shooting modes. An EV dial on the right side gives you quick access to exposure compensation. Changing the shutter speed and aperture In manual mode with the flash off provides a metering scale on the right of the optical viewfinder (just like my old rangefinder) as well as a real time preview that provides feedback of your exposure settings on the large rear LCD screen.
The facial recognition feature is like magic. It finds faces in the picture frame and determines best focus and depth of field - note it doesn't recognize dog faces. Manual focus is an option on this camera but it is uses the lcd screen and a scroll wheel on the back which will take a little getting used too.
Did I mention the ability to shoot Raw! Until the G10, I held on to my old Canon G4 as my pocket camera because the later models didn't shoot in Raw mode. The G10 offers all this and a ton more features along with the same Digic 4 image processing system as the new Canon 5D Mark II. At 14.7 megapixels this smallish carry camera can easily produce killer 11x17" prints. In the last 2 weeks almost every serious photographer I have spoken too has purchased this camera. As a matter of fact, I just left a meeting where 4 of the 6 people recently bought the G10.
