He's got buck teeth, he's lazy and spends months sleeping, and he only comes out to look for a little quickie lovin', but for one day a year, Punxsutawney Phil is a rock star. Well as close as a groundhog can come to rock stardom. This year, he yawned and predicted six more weeks of winter, according to my friend Vinny's website.
But what about the other 364 days a year? Well, Phil's off-duty, but the scientists, meteorologist and researchers keeping an eye on our weather are on duty 24/7. Among them: NASA and NOAA's shared monitoring, with the GOES satellite network.
NASA also has a Spaceflight Meteorology Group, with forecasts and studies that focus on key places involved in space launches and landings. Goddard Space Flight Center provides an excellent FAQ listing on many key weather and environment topics.
Party on, Phil. It's your day. And I hope you're wrong this year. And thanks to alert reader Shelley, who caught my winter angst-induced swapping of "weeks" for "years."
