Time travel is a staple of science fiction. But now, two top physicists say that time travel is possible--and one plans to build a time travel machine (shades of H.G. Wells!).
In a special presentation tonight at 5 p.m. EST, the National Geographic Channel opens the world of theoretical physics and time travel. "Can lasers send us back in time?" is part of the Naked Science series on NatGeo.
Two prominent phyicists both have championed the cause of time travel. Dr. Michio Kaku, a co-founder of string field theory and a prolific author, wraps (or is that warps?) together time travel and parallel universes. Losing his father at an early age propelled Dr. Ronald Mallet into research and a determinatin to build a time travel machine. Spike Lee has optioned Mallett's memoir, Time Traveler, to make into feature film.
Here, Kaku discusses the paradoxes of time travel.
Next, Mallett twirls a spoon in a cup of coffee to explain how lasers can twist space, and eventually time, to allow time travel to the past.
