Mars Phoenix Lander scientists will hold a press conference today to discuss new findings from Mars--and not ones that prove, as some reported, life on Mars. . Instead, the University of Arizona team will discuss finding perchlorate, a salt, in some samples.

On Earth, perchlorate is a natural and manmade contaminant sometimes found in soil and groundwater. It is the main ingredient in solid rocket fuel and can be found in fireworks, pyrotechnics and other explosives. Although the team is carefully analyzing the possibility that the Lander itself contaminated the soil, the fuel used in the craft's landing thruster was hydrazine.

Until we know more, lean back, relax, and enjoy a humorous view of just what might be on the Red Planet.
