Writer and director Christopher Nolan has been very quiet about the next installment in the Batman films, a franchise he not only resurrected but revitalized.  The Dark Knight was such a massive success, both financially as well as thematically, a third Batman films is expected, but nothing is set to stone.  Nolan has been asked if he intends in doing a third film, and his answer is a casual yes, but the process is arduous.  Nolan helped write, and produce the last Batman film as well as directing the film, Nolan also co-wrote and directed Batman Begins, so Nolan's hand is required for the integrity of the third film.

Rumors have abounded ever since the release of The Dark Knight.  The rumor that should strike fear into the hearts of fans is the question of whether or not Nolan will be apart of the third film.  As of the most recent interviews Nolan has said he will be just as attached to the next film as he was to the previous two, and the fans rejoice.  The prior Batman franchise created with brilliance by director Tim Burton was all but ruined by director Joel Schumacher with Batman Forever and Batman and Robin.  Schumacher lost Michael Keaton as Batman and "jumped the shark" in a sense, adding cast members like the tolerable Chris O'Donnell in Batman Forever and the exhausting Alicia Silverstone in Batman and Robin.  A Robin character in Nolan's next film would not necessarily be an unwelcome sight, but it takes a visionary, articulate filmmaker, like Nolan, to craft the character correctly.

The third set of villains for the hopefully soon to be released film is also in high discussion.  Nolan followed Burton's path by having two standout villains in The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger's masterful Joker and Aaron Eckhart's Two-Face.  The first film did have two less noticeable villains, Carmine Falcone (Tom Wilkinson) and Henri Ducard (Liam Neeson), to Cillian Murphy's Dr. Jonathan Crane, The Dark Knight like  Burton's Batman Returns was the first that had two major villain characters.  The first major rumor was the notion that the Riddler would be one of the main villains in the next film.  The actor whose name has been most attached to the rumor is Eddie Murphy, still there is no definite truth as of yet.  A more secure rumor is the revisioning of Catwoman in the third film.  The role of Catwoman for the film has been rumored to be offered to the likes of Angelina Jolie, Rachel Wiesz, Kate Beckinsale, and Sierra Miller.  The role should be one to fight for, whoever is contending for the part, though Jolie or Weisz would be the most welcomed sight.

Eckhart's Two-Face character is the another question mark in a field hopefuls.  Two-Face is suspected dead, dying at the end of The Dark Knight, a result of a relatively short fall considering he survived an explosion, a massive burn, a car accident, and a murderous rampage hunting various criminals.  Still, the question remains whether or not Two-Face is dead.  Eckhart has reportedly been tired of being asked, so he has stayed quiet on any word of the return of his character, or if their will be a film for the character to return to.  There have been a lot of shocking rumors circulating about cast for the third film, many with little creditability, but still interesting.  The first being the casting of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, who would make an excellent Penguin.  The other is the replacement of Christian Bale, who is arguably the best Batman ever, with Bale's Terminator: Salvation costar Sam Worthington.  The rumor is probably one hundred percent false, but the notion is capable of inducing major anxiety to film fans.  Ultimately, the facts are almost non-existent, and the rumors abound about the film, which will surely be a massive success.

The third in Nolan's borderline genius revisioning of Batman is still in pre-production if in consideration at all.  Another film is practically required following the success of the two previous.  Nolan invested so much of himself in the first two films that it is not hard to understand why he may want to pace himself, take a little time off before the next film, though fans are anxious.  Nolan has a massive task at hand, crafting an intricate and brilliant script to contend with the first films, and then direct an overwhelming production, orchestrating numerous players to work at their best.  Nolan has done it all before, and hopefully Nolan is willing to undertake the project once again in order to create another masterwork of film.
