This Is It; Michael JacksonMichael Jackson's exceptional talent is undeniable.  His incredible musical gift was evident at a young age and carried with him through many decades of record-breaking hits, creatively cutting-edge videos, and unparalleled live performances.  As he got older however, the controversy and scandal that shrouded his strange personal life overwhelmed his artistic abilities and became the forefront of his presence in the spotlight.  It was easy for many people to forget what an amazing star Jackson was and how he had revolutionized pop music as we know it.  This Is It is a spectacular reminder of just how brilliant Micheal Jackson, the artist, was.

The movie is an exciting glimpse at what Jackson was preparing for his 50 sold-out shows at London's O2 Arena (that were scheduled for July 2009).  Videographers captured intimate moments during dress rehearsal, dance practice, and production for video that was to be shown on a giant screen at the back of the stage.  The movie showed Jackson singing a host of songs, all the classics including some Jackson 5 numbers, and the audience was made to feel like we were in the arena watching it unfold in person.  The most remarkable thing was that Jackson still had it- his vocals were breathtakingly on key and he could still moonwalk with delicate precision.  He knew exactly what he wanted to hear and exactly how his music should sound.  His perfectionism was evident and he demanded it from everyone around him, but in a gentle, nonthreatening way.

The elaborate set that Jackson performed on was incredible.  The lights were scintillating, the moving parts were high-tech- everything came together to create the vision for one of the most aesthetically entertaining expereinces around.  There was an extremeley talented crew who did extensive work putting together videos that were to accompany the songs during the live performance.  Through the help of green screens, luxurious costumes, and extravagant makeup, the production crew did things like cleverly place Jackson in an old black and white action film for "Smooth Criminal" and create an extravagant graveyard filled with creepy monsters and sinister ghouls for "Thriller".

The backup dancers were among the best in the world; the choreographers were of the highest caliber; the set director was brilliant; but the most incredible thing was Jackson himself.  They way he sang each song with smooth perfection and glided across the stage in fluid dance moves was awe-inspiring.  Jackson was a pop music mogul.  His music is monumental and his fame is unmatchable.  Artists simply don't get that big any more.  There aren't standout musicians that have the ability to reach fans across the world.  No matter your age, race, culture, gender, or affinity for specific music genres, you love Michael Jackson's melodies.  The movie was a fantastic reminder that, aside from whatever went on his personal life, Michael Jackson was one of the world's greatest and most gifted entertainers of all time.  He is a legend, who inspired millions and affected us all.  He truly is the King of Pop.  May he rest in peace.
