Afraid to fly? If you have an iPhone, you can now have an application designed to soothe your fears - provided the flight isn't too turbulent to let you employ it. Sorry. I'm a confident flyer (or is it a fatalistic one?) but a recent short but bouncy hop from the San Francisco area to San Diego encouraged a bout of deep breathing, spiritual contemplation, and a quick mental analysis of whether driving would be really that much longer or more expensive than flying.
The new app is designed by Virgin Atlantic, which apparently takes offense at the statistics that up to 1 in 3 adults may be fearful of flying. Sensing a potentially vast new market, they've taken some of the materials from their popular and seemingly successful fear-of-flying classes and optimized them for the iPhone. They're not sugar-coating people's fears - the program includes answers to questions like "What happens if all the engines fail?" and "What happens if an engine catches fire?"
The cost of the Flying Without Fear application, which is a combination of therapy, exercises, and reassurance, is US $4.95 and can be downloaded at the iPhone store.
