Those of us who love to travel on the cheap - because that means we get to travel still more - tend to pounce on low fares when we see them if we know where we're going next month or next season.  But what if you've just missed that great rate?

Don't assume that the offer ends on the stated date. I'm seeing "Fare Sale Extended!" notices all the time right now.

There's also been a shift away from the major search services. More and more, I'm recommending first checking a fare on one of the "big" comparison engines, and then going direct to the airline website. Most of the time I'm finding a better fare on the direct website than on the comparison engines. They've trained us to think that they will have the best prices, but that isn't always true.

And it never hurts to remember that low fare sales tend to come in flocks. If your favorite airline sale has just ended, it's very possible that a competing airline has a similar or better fare available.
