Isles make changes to coaching staff
For the second straight season the Islanders managed to lead the entire NHL in a crucial category; unfortunately for fans of the organization, it happened to be in an unenviable area. This past season the Islanders lost a combined 582 man games, which easily eclipsed their league-leading mark set in 2007-2008 of 414 games. This campaign was unlike any in recent memory in regard to injuries and someone had to pay for it. The team recently announced that they would be parting ways with strength and conditioning coach Chris Schwarz.
The bulk of the 582 man games lost stemmed from season-ending injuries to goaltender Rick DiPietro and forward Mike Sillinger, who missed a combined 151 games last season. Another top earner in this realm was defenseman Andy Sutton and his 58 games missed due to a broken wrist and foot. The Islanders have started the search for a replacement , which figures to intensify in order to have the new coach in place for camp this summer.
Another casualty of the New York coaching staff was assistant coach Dan Lacroix. Lacroix became expendable once Islanders coach Scott Gordon determined the importance of adding a defensive coach to his crew. Ken Morrow, former member of the dynasty team and current Director of Pro Scouting, frequently joined the team during last season to work exclusively with the defense. Lacroix worked under head coach Ted Nolan, and was retained once Scott Gordon took the helm. No word yet as to whom Gordon may be considering for his defensive assistant coach.
