The Hunting by Casey Weldon
"The Hunting" by Casey Weldon

You may not realize this, but this October's First Friday is the seventh anniversary of the monthly downtown art walk. While it's seen better days, First Friday is still the nexus for much of the local visual art scene's activity. And as usual, its monthly appearance tends to be the glue connecting related arts events, including the now-traditional Thursday preview nights at the Arts Factory (107 E. Charleston Blvd. at Main Street).

This Thursday, Casey Weldon debuts his newest series of paintings at Trifecta Gallery inside the Arts Factory with the exhibit "Becomings and Goings." Catch the acclaimed artist from 5 to 9 p.m. at the gallery during the preview reception.

Around the corner, a brand new space for artistic expression is debuting with a grand opening Friday night from 6 to 11 p.m. Place Gallery (1054 S. Main St.) features dedicated exhibit space, working artists' studios and space for music and performances. The debut exhibit is a group show by members of local collective Art Renegades, which specializes in outsider art. Members include such mainstays as Mark T. Zeilman, Teresa Williams and Mike Biggs.

Further demonstrating the tenacity of the Arts District, another new venue comes online this weekend as well: SPACE. Featuring an open floor plan with individual office units catering to creative and freelance professionals, SPACE (8 E. Charleston Blvd.) offers 24-hour amenities such as desks, phone access and internet services. The large front room will be used for workshops, events, meetings and lectures, as well as display of owner Jana Cruder's photography. The new SPACE will be open during First Friday from 6 to 10 p.m.
