Flower Stand in Milan, ItalyYou've made the move and now it's time to make some friends.

Living overseas can sometimes be a lonely experience and it is easy to feel or even become isolated. So how can you get connected in your new home?

The world wide web is your best ally when seeking out and cultivating a new social circle abroad.

Expatriate forums are a great tool to seeking out new friends. You can find these forums and websites by googling, “expats in (name of country.)

Blogs are your next best option after forums. Bloggers give you the pulse of the city or country you are living in and are a great way to relate to common interests and shared pet peeves. The benefit of blogs is that they often include links to the expat forums or websites that the blogger actively contributes to or participates in.

Find an expat-blog in your country by visiting here or start your own!

Thirdly, click on over to Meetup.com. You can find groups that are active in your city or town and even start one of your own if you are finding it hard to connect. Meetup.com allows you to search based on topic or interest and the country you are residing in.

Finally, when you've exercised the previous options above to no avail there is always the TEFL or ESL forums. These are forums frequented by English teachers living abroad. Teaching English may not be your cup o' tea, but ESL boards will assist in pointing you in the right direction for making social connections overseas.

Dave's ESL Cafe is one of the web's biggest ESL boards. So why not drop on in and say “hello” at the forum there?

Obviously, there is no replacing your closest friends and family members back home, but getting connected to other expatriates abroad (that have walked a mile or two in the same shoes as you) makes for a great substitute.
