The Denver Highlanders Rugby Football Club and the Queen City Rams Rugby Football Club announced a merger of the two teams Monday.

The merged clubs will register with the Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union (ERRFU) as Denver Rugby and field five teams for the 2009-2010 season. Denver Rugby's teams will consist of the Highlanders (division I), the Rams (division 2), a C- side team, an Under 23, and an Old Boys side.

“We’ll be extremely competitive on the field in this coming fall and spring seasons, and also have a unified effort to gain additional resources and corporate partnership opportunities,” said Highlander’s President Bryan Ellsaesser.

Denver Rugby has several charity and fund raising events planned for the fall, including the Rocky Mountain Challenge Prep Rugby Tournament, Children’s Hospital, and Big Brothers/Big Sisters.

Highlander head coach Steve Lewis will take the helm for Denver Rugby. Alex Agre and Queen City coach Neil Rushbrooke take on the roll of assistant coaches.

The Highlanders formed in 1968. In 2009 they reached the Division I Playoffs.

The Division II Queen City Rams Rugby Football Club was formed in 1972 and has a long tradition of rugby in Denver.
