Rugby teams from across the Front Range and mountain towns converged on the Ski Town Fields in Steamboat Springs to compete in the 35th Annual Cowpie Classic Saturday.

Eight teams divided into two pools played three matches each. To the pool winners came the chance to play for the coveted Cowpie trophy.

Steamboat Springs Rugby, the tournament’s host, dominated Pool 1. Following a 29 point shutout of Fort Collins, Steamboat rolled into the final without having a single point scored against them in their final two the pool matches against Glenwood Springs and Boulder.

In Pool 2, the Wyoming Cowboys advanced by defeating Vail 31-5 and then shutting out the Denver Highlanders two hours later 26-0. Their final pool match came against a well prepared Breckinridge side.  Breckenridge provided the Cowboys with the biggest threat in pool two, but Wyoming managed to hold off the challenge by defeating the Gentlemen of the Blue Goose by a score of 21-7.

With Steamboat and Wyoming 3-0 in their respective pools, each prepared to meet in the Cowpie Classic Final as the thunderstorms began moving down the Yampa River.

The Cowpie Classic got its name following a rugby tournament held near the Steamboat Springs rodeo grounds in 1973. During the night, livestock escaped onto the field, but play continued the following day despite the hazards left behind. Since then the Cowpie Classic has been an annual event for the Steamboat Springs Rugby Club that monikers itself as “Probably the best club in the world.”

New to Rugby?
Rugby is normally played in two forty-minute halves (thirty for high school) with a ten-minute halftime. The clock continues to run through the game unless a serious injury prompts the referee to stop time. During one and two day tournaments, such as the Cowpie Classic, play is often shortened to forty minutes to allow teams to play multiple games in a single day.
