The USA Women’s National Rugby team faced off against the Women of Rugby Canada in smash-mouth game at Glendale’s Infinity Park Saturday evening. In a physical game, which included a pair of yellow cards for both the USA and Canada, the first forty minutes expired with the teams level at five points each.

Canada’s offense came alive in the second half and ran up 15 unanswered points before the USA’s Vanesha McGee broke away in the 74th minute for the first Eagles’ try (unconverted) of the second half.

The score brought the Eagles to with in ten, but the Canadian Women answered two minutes later with a try (unconverted) of their own to secure the victory. A final try (unconverted) by the USA in the 80th minute closed out the match with a final score of 25 -17.

The Can-Am match in Colorado was the first of five matches this summer, as the USA kicks off its journey towards the Women’s Rugby World Cup in 2010, which will be held in England next August and September. The Women’s Eagles will play their remaining games in the Nations Cup Tournament in Toronto next August.

New to Rugby?
Rugby is played in two forty-minute halves (thirty for high school) with a ten-minute halftime. The clock continues to run through the game unless a serious injury prompts the referee to stop time.

A try is similar to football's touchdown and is worth five points. A successful conversion (extra point) scores two additional points. Penalty kicks and drop goals are scored at three points each.
