Eric DeKruif scores the Barbarian's game tying try.

The Denver Highlanders Rugby Football Club played the Denver Barbarians to a tie at Frances Wisebart Jacobs Park Saturday.

The Highlanders jumped to an early twenty-point lead in the first half, and it appeared as though a rout was in the making. Clinton Camp and Leif Gibson lead the first half scoring with ten points each. The Highlanders lead 25-5 at the half.

In the second half, the Highlanders continued where they left off with an early penalty kick, but fifteen minutes in to the half, the game turned. The Barbarians  scored twenty-six points to the Highlander’s six. The last seven came when Barbarian’s Lock, Eric DeKruif, scored a try in the waning minutes. The conversion tied the game at 31-31.

Saturday’s match was a friendly and had no effect on the two teams’ current standings in their respective leagues. The Highlanders are in second place in the Western Rugby Football Union.

The Barbarians were undefeated last fall and won their third consecutive Eastern Rockies Rugby Football Union, Division 2 title. Next year the Barbarians move to Western RFU Division 1. The Barbarians also have a Super league side.

New to the sport? Locks are forwards who makeup the second row of the scrum. They are usually the jumpers in a line out.
Rugby is played in two forty-minute halves. A try is five points, and the successful conversion of a try (football’s extra point) is worth two points.
