Visiting the Denver Botanical Gardens!
Some of you know that I am a photographer, so this article could be a little skewed towards one of my favorite places, but I do hope you will visit a wonderful treasure we have in the Denver area. The Denver Botanical Gardens.
As home schoolers, getting our kids out into the field of learning is just as important as covering the books and the DBG is such a place where you can cover art, science, literature, and physical education all wrapped into one day or just the afternoon.
Load the backpacks full of art supplies, water, sunscreen, camera, lunch, and A Child’s Garden of Verses by Louis Stevenson. Whether sitting in the by the Water Gardens or in the Japanese Garden, the experience is serene for all ages. Pondering can be just as productive as pushing to get a chapter done in a text book.
Did you know there is a library at the Botanic Gardens with numerous books on botany to xeriscape gardening? The librarians at the Helen Fowler Library are very knowledgeable concerning plants, Colorado’s ecosystem, and such. There many hands on activities that children of all ages will enjoy. They have so much information on gardening, here is another link page.
Taking time as a family to enjoy the outdoors is what homeschooling is all about. Being able to take the classroom with you, September and October are great months to visit the gardens. Flowers are still in bloom. The days are cooler and the crowds are as numerous.
Hope to see you there!
