Even though home-school families don’t necessarily get as exposed to colds and viruses as other families do. It is still important to take measures to protect the family from the flu. As the H1N1 flu virus spreads throughout the Denver metro area, here are some recommendations to help avoid getting the flu this season. Teaching our children these simple steps will help them to bypass becoming ill during the school year. And no mom enjoys having sick children at home.

  1. Wash your hands with soap and water
  2. Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing
  3. Keep from touching your eyes and mouth.
  4. Periodically disinfect toys and writing utensils
  5. Carry hand sanitizer with you
  6. Increase vitamin intake and fluids
  7. Avoid touching public doors, handles, and phones.
  8. Wash your fruits and vegetables
  9. Do not eat or drink after others
  10. Visit your doctor if you begin to show any signs or symptoms of fever, cough, runny nose, muscle aches, decreased appetite, or lethargy.

If your child or family member does become ill, please refrain from going to work, school, or extra curricular activities. This will help suppress the flu in our area. Get plenty of rest while you recuperate, the flu should pass in about ten days.

Educational videos or books on tape are a great way to pass the time if your kiddo is sick and you don’t want them to fall behind. Here is to a healthy home-school year!
