I am taking a small break from the home school heart series this week. I will return with another installment next week. With school starting, I thought a top ten list would be light and fun  way to start of the school year.

 10. Ease into your schedule. I liken the first few weeks of school to stretching before a marathon. If the muscles aren’t stretched, a runner can tend to loose steam quickly and it is very difficult to finish the race.

09. Think positively about the school year. Change tends to come in small increments. Allow yourself patience with a hopeful outlook; it will enable you to have all the perseverance you will need.

08. Plan for interruptions. Families don’t run like businesses or a conveyor belts. Even though most of us moms would love the idea of being able to feed, teach, clean, and send our children to bed at the same time everyday, that isn't realistic or normal. :)

07. Take time to yourself. 15 minutes a day can change anyone’s attitude. I used to take a long shower when my kids were little. The rule was, if the house isn’t burning down; do not knock on the door, what ever is going on,  can wait. For some reason they have forgotten that rule as teenagers…

06. Make sure to start the day with a nutritional meal. Statistics show that kids who eat a balanced breakfast tend to comprehend what they are learning with greater ease.

05. Keep a stash of emergency chocolate and coffee in a hiding place that only you know about. Plan to need them  more than once this year.

04. Find a support group that will encourage your children as well as yourself. Getting out with others who are like minded can make a huge difference for both mom and kids alike.

03. Laugh often. It reduces the tears for everyone involved. Learning to laugh at ourselves teaches our children that mistakes will happen and letting them go with grace is a greater lesson learned than any fact or figure.

02. Take time for your husband. It is so easy to be swallowed up with soccer schedules, papers to grade, meals to cook, and a house that needs cleaning. But he needs your time too, he married you, not his kid’s home school mom.

01. Pray. When overwhelmed, pray. When lonely, pray. When you feel like screaming, pray. When you feel like running away, pray. Prayer is a powerful influence on all hearts involved. Prayer truly does change things.

Here’s to another great home school year!
