Over the past few years, TV shows and movies, like The OC, Grey's Anatomy, and Garden State have brought the indie music genre into the limelight. Many artists wouldn't have the fanbases they do today if not for this media promotion. Marketing firms have started to jump onto the "hip music" bandwagon, featuring bands like Wilco (Volkswagon), Andrew Bird (Residence Inn), and Band of Horses (Ford) in commercials. Some commercials are able to pull off this placement better than others (car companies are usually in the clear), but when I heard the Flaming Lips song "Yeah Yeah Yeah song" in a Kraft salad dressing commercial, I couldn't help but laugh. Oh salad dressing.
