I've been listening to Midlake for several years now, and every once in a while I find myself asking when they are going to release a follow up to their great 2006 album, Trials Of Van Occupanther .
Turns out the band just did an interview with the music blog Stereogum, and filled them in on the status of their next LP. They are currently in the process of recording the album, which is going to be called Courage Of Others, in their hometown of Denton, Texas. It doesn't have a set release date yet, but they are spending 40 hours a week on the album, so it will most likely come out early 2009.
From the interview, it sounds like the band has taken so long to release new material because they weren't sure which direction they wanted to go as a band. Midlake's drummer McKenzie Smith says, "We could have made 10 albums with the amount of time we've spent, but that doesn't mean they'd be saying anything great." Smith goes on to say that their sound is less "Fleetwood Mac-y, America," and has more of a British folk sound of the late '60s.
Midlake was started by a group of jazz students attending the University of North Texas. The band is made up of frontman Tim Smith, guitarist Eric Pulido, bassist Paul Alexander, keyboardist Eric Nichelson, and drummer McKenzie Smith. When the group first started, they had funk/jazz roots, until they decided that they would expand their creativity by exchanging instruments to produce more of a pop sound. Jason Lee, the actor who plays Earl on the show My Name is Earl, is a huge Midlake fan, as is often promoting their music. He directed the bands music video “Balloon Maker” which you can see at their myspace.
