
Beverly Hills, CA — Oscar® winners Jonathan Demme, Anjelica Huston and Quentin Tarantino, as well as previous Honorary Award recipient Kirk Douglas, will be among the presenters at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ inaugural Governors Awards event on November 14. The evening will feature presentations of the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award to producer-executive John Calley, and Honorary Awards to actress Lauren Bacall, producer-director Roger Corman and cinematographer Gordon Willis.
The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given to an individual for “extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”
The Thalberg Award, a bronze bust of the legendary motion picture executive, is given to “a creative producer whose body of work reflects a consistently high quality of motion picture production". The Award is not given every year. Among past winners are: Clint Eastwood, George Lucas, Billy Wilder, Steven Spielberg, Ingmar Bergman, Alfred Hitchcock, Robert Wise, William Wyler, Jack L. Warner, George Stevens, Cecil B. DeMille, Arthur Freed, Samuel Goldwyn, Hal B. Wallis, Walt Disney, David O. Selznick and Darryl F. Zanuck. The bust has been re-designed three different times.
Some of the more memorable films Calley has produced are The Remains of the Day 1993, Postcards from the Edge 1990, Catch-22 1970, The Cincinnati Kid 1965, The Sandpiper 1965 and The Americanization of Emily 1964.
