Super foods worth stocking in the fridge (fruitionMedia.net)

Which foods offer weight loss nutrition and well being? Stock these five super foods in the fridge...

With hundreds of weight loss centers in the Chicago area, and thousands of weight management programs on the Internet, it seems like managing one’s body weight would be less arduous. While fad diets and low calorie-prepackaged weight loss programs temporarily remedy the bulge battle, they prevent dieters from learning new eating habits. Fortunately, five of the 10-super foods, fuel weight loss nutrition and promote well-being.

Super foods are not human growth hormones (HGH) laced supplements. Nor are they a provision, imparting extra human strength qualities. Ideal for everyday consumption and part of any well-balanced diet, super foods are comprised of the best sources of vitamins and minerals. They also have a reputation for being heart healthy and have the potential to prevent chronic diseases (i.e., diabetes, and cancer).

Most super foods share four to five common nutrients: Magnesium, potassium, calcium, fiber, and one or more B vitamins (niacin or folate).  Below are 5-super foods, a  brief nutritional profile, as well as tips on how to consume and/or cook them.

Oats
With almost 3 grams of fiber per serving, oats are loaded with magnesium, potassium calcium and niacin (vitamin B3). The grass with edible seeds is beneficial, increasing HDL (good) cholesterol and preventing blood clots. [Source: Eatright.org]

Weight loss nutrition tip: Since oatmeal suppresses the appetite, it is an excellent weight loss nutrition super food – to jumpstart the day.

Blueberries
Blueberries are loaded with vitamins and minerals, known to help ensure vitality and well being (anthocyanin, beta carotene, lutein, magnesium, potassium and fiber).

Super food tip:  To promote digestive health, add a handful of cleaned blueberries to a cup of plain yogurt.

Beans
Super foods, black beans or kidney beans – are exceptional for weight loss nutrition. With a minimum of 6 grams per serving, red kidney beans and black beans contain several multiple vitamins and minerals (B-complex vitamins, niacin, magnesium, calcium and fiber), trigger a feeling of fullness. Soy
Niacin, folate, calcium magnesium, and potassium are a few of the multiple vitamins and minerals found in soy. Foods and beverages containing soybean products (soy milk, tofu, edamame) are natural sources for lowering cholesterol. With the exception of soy in the powder form, foods with soy showed the same efficacy as statins in clinical trials. [The Journal of the American Medical Association (2003)]

Weight loss nutrition tip: To reduce calories, substitute beef, chicken, and other animal products with soy, a solid source of protein. [For recipe ideas, see the Tofu Chili Recipe]

Meanwhile, aside from stocking the fridge with the super foods included in the aforementioned list, downsizing portions, and reducing caloric intake are sure to fuel weight loss nutrition and promote well-being.
