The USTA National Senior Women's Clay Court Championships finished Sunday at the Houston Racquet Club with 18 winners in the 35 to 85 singles and doubles age groups. Winners, finalists and third-place finishers collected a total of 54 gold, silver or bronze USTA balls for their achievements.
Defending champion Angela Simon, Atlanta, repeated her 2008 win over second-seeded Julie Cass, Austin, to win the 35 singles title 6-4, 6-3. Later that afternoon she teamed with Meike Babel, Atlanta, to capture the 35 doubles title over Cass and Beverly Bowes-Hackney, Austin, 6-1, 6-0.
Frances Chandler, Tennessee, claimed the 45 singles title over Myke Loomis,Florida, 6-4, 6-2. Chandler, who is ranked No. 1 in the world in singles, was not as fortunate in doubles. She and partner Susan Boyer, Florida, were picked off 6-3, 6-1 in the 45 doubles by top seeds Mary Dailey, Florida,and Erika Smith, California.
Sherri Bronson, Arizona, the No. 2 seed, upset No. 3 Anne Guerrant, Arizona, 0-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the 55 singles. Martha Downing, California, and Kerry Young, Florida, blistered Kathy Barnes, California, and Bronson 6-1, 6-0.
Heide Orth, No. 1 in this tournament and in the world in 65 singles, a resident of both Florida and Germany, won the 65s when Suella Steel, California, retired with an injury in the first set. But Steel recovered to team with Orth for a 65 doubles win over the team of Lee Delfausse, New Hampshire, and Sheila Weinstock, Massachusetts, 4-6,6-3, 6-4.
Yvonne Van Nostrand, Vero Beach, Fla., battled Marietta Boswell, Maryland, to win the 75 singles 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. But Van Nostrand and Belmar Gunderson, Florida, fell 6-0, 6-4 to and Lee Burling, New York, in the 75 doubles.
Betty Eisenstein, Washington, D.C., breezed to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Marion Tyrell, California, in the 85 singles. The 85 doubles, which drew ten seniors, was a round robin, with Eisenstein and Tyrell winning the gold; Californians Phyllis Adler and Elizabeth Cookson taking the silver; and Houstonians Lovie Beard and Inka Stroud winning the bronze.
Although area players didn't win the big titles, many did emerge with fourth through sixth places, which count toward a player's national ranking: Lovie Beard, fifth in the 85 singles; Heidi Gerger, fourth in the 45 doubles with Susan Bushman, Massachusetts; Ivett Donoso, fifth in the 35 singles; Kristen Hess and Emily Schaefer, fifth in the 35 doubles; Jennifer Toney, sixth in the 35 doubles with Jennifer Engels of Frisco, Texas; Lenora Wright, fifth in the 45 doubles with Shelly Works, San Antonio; and Susan Bramlette, sixth in the 55 doubles with Kandy Chain, Los Angeles.
