Children's books about grandparents capture a unique relationship with someone very special to a child.  Grandparents are free to love and spoil grandchildren in ways that parents can't.  They share a perspective on life that reaches across time.  In the words of a popular grandparenting quote, "If I knew grandparenting would be this much fun, I'd have done it first."

Books about grandparents help children to savor this unconditional love and magical connection.  Here are some favorite children's books that celebrate the grandparents in our lives and our hearts.

  • Grandma and Me  Board Book by Karen Katz:  Karen Katz writes creates beautiful, fun interactive lift-the-flap books for babies and toddlers.  This book is no exception.  Grandpa and Me is also available.
  • In Grandma's Arms by Jayne Shelton and  Karen Katz  is another snuggle together favorite.  Who better than Grandma to lead a child on magical adventures only to return safely and exhausted to grandma's arms.
  • More, More, More Said the Baby by Vera Williams is a Caldecott Honor Book that celebrates individual and racial diversity with universal love.  Simple, playful and fun - this book feels "just right" to little children.
  • Our Granny by Margaret Wild and Julie Vivas attempts to bring "grannies" into the real world...with grannies who wear jeans and sneakers...work in an office...ride bikes...or have three or six husbands!  All are loved because "we have her".
  •  Abuela by Arthur Dorros and Elisa Kleven, in English with Spanish phrases, can be enjoyed by all children.  There must be some truth that children "fly" when they accompany their grandparents on any adventure and ordinary cityscapes are transformed when seen along side a grandparent.  Enjoy the magic!
  • A Grandma Like Yours/A Grandpa Like Yours is two books in one.  "A bubbe, a savta...no two are the same....A zayde, a sabe...a grandpa is special whatever his name."  Jewish holidays and traditions are revisited with grandparents leading the way.

Rarely does one book captures everything from a specific grandparent-grandchild relationship.  And grandparents in children's books rarely look like your child's grandparents.  So, you may also want to add a Make-Your-Own-Photo-Book with and about the grandparents in your family by compiling pictures of sleepovers at grandparents' house and fun activities together.

Happy Grandparents Day!
