The end of school year is a monumental transition time for children. They spent the majority of the last year building deep and wonderful relationships with teachers and friends. They got used to a routine every Monday through Friday through three seasons. Sure, there will be parties and gifts. There will be hugs and maybe a few tears. You can help your child or the children in your class say good bye to a special time and a special place.
Give children something a hold-in-their-hands memory of this school year. Give them a ritual to look around and remember what stands out for them in this classroom with these people. Older children can write a letter to their younger selves - the person who walked into the classroom September 2008, the younger self who is just a little different than the person walking out of this classroom June 2009. Younger children can make a photo book keepsake of things they want to remember from this year.
Here's a sample slideshow with photos from The Ruth and Edward Taubman Early Childhood Center Center in Boca Raton, Florida. Of course, your child's book will be as unique as his or her school experience this year. So, give your child a disposable camera to take pictures the last week of school. Print and laminate the photos. Bind into a book at home using ribbon or take to your local office supply store for binding or upload to your favorite photo website.
Special thanks to Ms. Mona and Ms. Bonnie for posing for my "teacher picture!
