I’m not talking about Dominicks vs. Jewel. I’m talking about how animals are raised for food and why you should care. Today’s Oprah show is about this issue (with the awesome Lisa Ling reporting), and is a good primer of issues we could all stand to learn more about. (What does cage free chicken farming really look like? Tune in to find out.) It’s not too late to catch the show; here in Chicago it runs again at 11pm (set your DVR or Tivo if you’re an early bird).

The politics of food and the origins of food are hot topics (the success of books like Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food and Eric Schlosser’s Fast Food Nation are evidence), and thankfully the trend is to care more and put our money where it counts. Later this week I will post about how you can make conscious food choices that won't break the bank, as well as more on why you should care about where your food comes from.
