Turbo Country Revs Up the DNC!
Attention alt-country, hard country music fans! August 25, 2008 Jesse Dayton will perform during the 2008 DNC!
From the Hardchargers Herald, August 10, 2008, “We've accepted an offer to perform at the Democratic National Convention in Denver Colorado. I don't talk politics at my shows (go see Steve Earle & Ted Nugent) because I have a lot of friends and family who are Democrats and Republicans. Like my religious beliefs, they are not open for discussion with any Constitutionalist, Conspiracy Theorist, Radical Right or Left Wingers, or even my smart Libertarian amigos. But all in all, regardless what side you’re on, it’s gonna be one hell of a historical convention!”
The press release and web site don’t list a specific venue, just the August 25th date. Once I find out more, I’ll post for sure. Since Denver’s Railbenders haven’t been picked for a DNC show (yet!), I’ll have to settle for Austin, Texas punk country legend Jesse Dayton!
I guess you could describe Jesse Dayton's brand of country music as "turbo country", an amalgamation of rockabilly roots, blues, cajun and punk. His 2004 album, Country Soul Brother, blew my socks off with its mix of honky-tonk, rockabilly, soul and a killer cover version of the Cars' "Just What I Needed". The following year Dayton was contacted by Rob Zombie to write songs for his new horror movie, The Devil's Rejects. The songs from the soundtrack, released on the faux greatest hits album Banjo & Sullivan: The Ultimate Collection 1972-1978, are an absolute riot! I can’t see him playing “I'm Home Getting Hammered While She's Out Getting Nailed" with much of a positive response from the DNC crowd, but I think it’s safe to say that when Jesse Dayton hits the stage at the 2008 DNC, he and his band will be rocking the convention “hardchargerin’ style!
