With The Twilight Saga: New Moon a little over four months away, it is nice to review some of the reasons that one might be so inspired to see the film. That is, by looking at some of our favorite moments in Stephenie Meyer's New Moon, we can really see the story as it occurs through each and every line.
That said, today's submission is from Arreanna Masner (and the others, which are also brilliant, are featured below). It is from Chapter 9, page 218:
"What is it Jake?" I asked.
"There's something I want to tell you, Bella...but I think It's going to sound kind of corny."
I sighed. This would be more of the same from the theater. "Go ahead."
"It's just that, I know you're unhappy a lot. And, Maybe it doesn't help anything, but I wanted you to know that I'm always here. I won't ever let you down-- I promise that you can always count on me. Wow, that does sound corny. But you know that, right? That I would never, ever hurt you?"
"Yeah, Jake. I know that. And I already do count on you, probably more than you know."
The smile broke across his face the way the sunrise set the clouds on fire...
There is a lot going on in this quote.
Firstly, and most obviously, we can see Jacob's heart laid plainly out on the table for Bella to grab. Not only does Jacob offer Bella friendship, but he offers her the one thing that she has lost with Edward's departure - comfort and reliability.
Jacob does indeed offer Bella this end, in New Moon and throughout the story - a life that would be semi-normal (or, at least, as close to normal as Bella - with her propensities for other-worldly beings - is going to get other than with Mike Newton). He also offers her a shoulder.
Most importantly, he offers her sunshine. As we know, Edward's decision to leave Bella is gut-wrenching (literally). Bella is left with a hole that gapes endlessly at the thought of him. Not only that, but Bella is also left without her center, her happiness - her sunshine.
Jacob's part in Bella's life in New Moon is certainly enigmatic of the sun. He brings light, hope, a resemblance of happiness, and breath back into Bella's life - a fact for which she will feel eternally grateful and indebted to him (though, this feeling, we will later learn, is also a part of a grand design with Renesmee and imprinting, in Breaking Dawn).
This quote illuminates, very well, the promise of Jacob.
How about, for next time, something from the Cullens? What's your favorite Cullen coven moment in New Moon?
