Not sure which DVD to pull off the new release shelf? Need a new Blu-ray to show off in 1080p? Or maybe you're looking through the new releases on Netflix and don't know what to add to your queue?
This week you'll find quite a couple films from my worst of 2009 list but also a few less marketed but better movies as well.
Food, Inc. - Rent-it - Another film like Fast Food Nation that will have you shopping in the organic and healthy food aisles of the supermarket for weeks.
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra - Rent-it - Despite every early review in anticipation of horrid cartoonish performances, G.I. Joe is an action-packed summer blockbuster and better than expected.
Unmistaken Child - Rent-it - Rent this real-time documentary about the search for a reincarnated Tibetan master if you are into history channel, documentary-style stories about the utter power of true faith.
Will Ferrell: You're Welcome, America: A Final Night with George W. Bush - Rent-it - A hilarious, 2-hour version of the SNL comedian's one-man stand-up act from Broadway about the 43rd President of the United States.
Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 - Skip-it - Despite Denzel and Travolta's usual draw there seems to be a lack of interest in this remake of the much better original of the same name.
Hardwired - Skip-it - Just read this laughable cast and plot: "Cuba Gooding, Jr., Val Kilmer, and Michael Ironside headline this sci-fi action flick about a man who must fight for his life after receiving a lethal brain implant."
The Answer Man - Skip-it - An indie comedy that feels more like a rushed studio pic, with bad acting and implausible scenarios, it is one major movie cliche after another.
Aliens in the Attic - Skip-it - Three signs you shouldn't see a film: Studio changes the name to pull in any whining-begging kids that can read (was originally titled They Came From Upstairs); directors last film was a disaster (John Shultz's The Honeymooners); and studio won't let press see it early.
I Love You, Beth Cooper - Skip-it - This film, like its star Hayden Panettiere, is the same formula for a teenage romantic comedy and poster girl you've seen a hundred times before. Beth Cooper lacks any originality and actually reinforces the stereotypes it attempts to exploit.
Movies re-released on Blu-ray format this week:
It's a Wonderful Life - Buy-it - This classic holiday film is my mom's all-time favorite, and one of the only movies you can (and maybe already do) watch every year come Christmas time.
Forrest Gump - Buy-it - It may very well have been the first DVD you ever purchased (unless you jumped on the Twister on DVD bandwagon and paid $100+), but whether or not you own it on DVD (or VHS) Forrest Gump is unarguably one of the best films of all-time, and even better in HD.
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation - Rent-it - The third in the series of National Lampoon's "vacation" films starring Chevy Chase's Griswold family may very well be the best, and is certainly one of the top 10 Christmas movies ever made.
Love Actually - Skip-it - Though an original story (or montage of stories), Love Actually is far from being one of the best holiday films, and though the cast shines (Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Keira Knightley, and more) the movie itself does not.
