Here is a list of all the new movies playing in theaters this week:
Paranormal Activity - See-it if you can - One of the top ten scariest movies of all time - This film about a "real" haunted house is finally earning a wider release, and you HAVE to see it when it finally arrives in your town (because it will). Paranormal Activity is an absolutely terrifying faux-documentary (think Blair Witch Project) that will have you finally believing that horror movies can scare the living sh*t out of you again. And if you haven't read the story about Steven Spielberg, the haunted DVD copy of the film, and him being inexplicably locked inside his own studio, read it here: The film that jolted Spielberg into ‘yes’
Where the Wild Things Are - See-it - Spike Jonze's recreation of the children's book masterpiece is dark and beautiful, with honest, real and life-like performances both human and "wild."
Black Dynamite - Rent-it - A hysterical 1970s blaxsploitation film about, and I quote, "“The Man” murders his brother, pumps heroin into local orphanages, and floods the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor."
The Informant! - Rent-it - Don't let the poorly marketed trailers fool you, this film is not a slapstick comedy, it's an ironic satire, and Matt Damon is quietly hilarious playing this corporate whistle-blower named Double-O-14.
Law Abiding Citizen - Skip-it - Butler and Foxx will quickly become box-office busters if they keep this junk up - think Saw meets Usual Suspects but with none of the good parts and all of the bad.
The Stepfather - Skip-it - These trailers (and even the title) are why we all hate watching previews and reading critics reviews these days. Stay away from this studio-produced drivel and go see (or rent) any of these 10+ better "horror" films from 2009.
New York, I Love You - Skip-it - A tempting cast for Gossip-Girly teens and twenty-somethings (Bradley Cooper, Shia LaBeouf, Natalie Portman, Blake Lively) dying to live in NYC but New York, I Love You's collection of story-telling shorts about the city is mostly feeble and always inconsistent.
