The television ads you've seen are true -- you can now take Amtrak's Acela train from Washington's Union Station to New York's Penn Station for just $99 each way. Whether you travel to the Big Apple for business or pleasure, now is the time to book your plans.
I did a little research to uncover the details of this offer and they're fairly simple: The $99 fare is available on business class seats only (not first class); travel must be booked at least 14 days in advance; and the fare is available now through the end of June.
The Acela happens to be my favorite method of transportation to NY from DC. The trains are fairly modern and clean, and seats provide lots of leg room and plug-ins for mobile devices. (Your ability to get work done on the train should make your boss as happy as the discounted ticket prices.) Best of all, you can avoid airport check-in and security lines, making the 2 hour, 45 minute train trip shorter in the end than flying. (Oh yeah, and they serve some decent beers on board, like Heineken, Sam Adams and Stella.)
Need more reasons to visit New York this spring? Try these:
1) Temperatures are warming and flowers blooming in Central Park, making it one of the best times of year for a stroll or bike ride there.
2) Discounted hotel rates are available on sites like Expedia.com.
3) There's a lot happening on Broadway, including discounted tickets on offer for shows. Consider seeing Matthew Broderick in The Philanthropist, Jane Fonda in 33 Variations, or Rupert Everett and Angela Lansbury in Blithe Spirit.
