If San Diego in the fall or winter is on your itinerary, take a day to investigate the offerings at

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park.

While difficult to pry yourself from the scenic vistas enjoyed closer to the ocean, the desert area is an interesting place to get away from the big city feel of San Diego.

Don't feel like paying to get into a state park that's probably not as well-maintained as it might have been had the state been flush with taxpayers' cash?

There is a freebie out that way, for just the cost of a car and some gas. This one comes courtesy of Sunset Magazine.

That would be the steel-sculptured behemoths erected by artist Ricardo Arroyo Breceda. All manner of giant beasties are in the offing, many of them viewable from Borrego Springs Road.

The advice from Sunset: Grag a map from the Borrego Springs Chamber (760.676.5555) or you can go to galletameadows.com to download a copy.

Up to 80 are envisioned, and at last report, there were more than 40 works weighing up to 1,000 pounds.
