When Joakim Noah's name is mentioned in NBA circles, the common theme you hear brought up is the third-year centers energy. A skill set is never even thought of, it's all about how active Noah is.
In Tuesday night's 87-86 win over the Milwaukee Bucks (2-3), Noah put up 20 points, 16 rebounds (6 offensive), and 3 blocks.
He scored on a variety of hooks and using his length to his advantage. Don't look now, but if this kind of play is something we see on a consistent basis, his energy maybe mentioned second, alongside his deceptive post play.
"I'm trying to be more aggressive, but at the same time, not do too much," said Noah. "I understand my role is always going to be the energy guy, try to get offensive rebounds, try to get extra possessions for my team. If I can add like a hook shot or something, especially at end-of-the-clock situations, I think that can help the team."
Rookies, Taj Gibson (15 points and 10 rebounds) and James Johnson (11 points, 4-5 FG/A) got their first taste of playing in front of the hometown crowd, in uniform, as Johnson competed in a summer contest in the United Center.
Gibson complained of pre-game jitters, but that didn't seem to affect his play.
"My heart was beating 100 miles a minute," Gibson said. "When you look up and see those banners and think about Scottie Pippen and some of the other guys who played here, you're bound to get a little nervous. I'm a city kid from New York who really loves basketball and follows basketball so it was definitely special to play here tonight."
