Federal investigators launched a full investigation into the monorail crash at Walt Disney World. The accident killed one train operator, 21-year old Austin Wuennenberg.
One of the monorail trains crashed into another early Sunday morning in the area around the Magic Kingdom. The incident was the first fatal accident in the 38-year history of the monorail at the Florida vacation destination.
Representatives reported that no visitors were seriously injured. Five were treated for minor injuries.
The transit system, which shuttles thousands of guests around the Disney complex every day, will be shut down during the investigation by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Normally the monorail shuttles thousands of visitors around the Disney property every day. The Magic Kingdom increased its other modes of transportation - ferries, boats and buses - for visitors to the park.
A senior spokesman for Disney declined to comment on the circumstances of the crash or how the Disney monorail system operates.
A representative of Stetson University near Deland confirmed that Wuennenberg attended the school. The young student studied computer science.
The monorail first opened in Disneyland in Anaheim in 1958, based on a futuristic train system in Germany. The larger version opened in Florida in 1971.
