Is Marcus Camby, left, destined to try to do only this on game nights this season? (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

While perusing the NBA portion of the foxsports.com website during lunch a couple of days ago, looking for new content from the best NBA writer that I've read, I came across a few questions from Charley Rosen about the Los Angeles Clippers's upcoming 2009-2010 season. (http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/10135100/I%27ve-got-questions;-do-teams-have-answers?)

Los Angeles Clippers

Is Blake Griffin for real? Will he get sufficient touches to prove that he either is or isn't? Does Baron Davis really care about sacrificing his own numbers in order to win? How much will the Clippers have to depend on career underachievers like Sebastian Telfair, Ricky Davis and Marcus Camby to be competitive?

Now, Rosen is rather legendary for his occasionally hyper-critical views of teams and players in the NBA, but there is plenty of truth to be found in what he has to write. So let's take a quick look and see how much veracity can be gleaned from each query.

It remains to be seen if Griffin is "for real", but Rosen is correct that if he doesn't get enough touches, we'll have no idea either way, because while rebounding and defense are important and oft-overlooked parts of basketball, putting the ball in the basket is the object of the game.

As for Baron Davis, it's easy to label him as selfish, especially considering his "bad-shot bonanzas" in the second halves of games in 2008-2009, but he's proven at other stops that he can get his teammates involved while being a top-notch scorer. Now that he's had some time to adjust to a new team and its players, I expect we'll see less bad shots and more productivity from the veteran point guard.

And lastly, we have the "career underachievers" bit. This is one of Rosen's habitual, rather harsh, assessments, as while Telfair hasn't blown any doors off, he certainly hasn't been bad. Camby played on an NBA Finals Knicks team earlier in his career, and Ricky Davis has proven he can score at just about every stop he's made in his NBA journey. However, Rosen tends to equate winning with achievement, and with zero rings between the three, perhaps he was correct in calling them out as potential season-stoppers if they do not perform at or beyond expectations. I expect Telfair and Davis to play hard and contribute, and as long as Camby can stay healthy and focused, I think he'll have a solid season as well.
