According to a report made by NBA.com Friday, the Los Angeles Clippers have re-signed marksman forward Steve Novak. (http://www.nba.com/clip/news/breakingnews090911.html)
The Los Angeles Clippers today announced that the team has re-signed restricted free agent forward Steve Novak. Per team policy terms of the deal were not announced.
In 71 games played for the Clippers last season, Novak averaged 6.9 points in 16.4 minutes per game. Completing his third NBA season, the sharpshooter out of Marquette connected on 119-286 three-pointers (.416) on the year.
It hasn't been determined why the Clippers took so long to re-sign Novak. Perhaps the team's recent interest in Ramon Sessions (since signed on with another team) in tandem with all of the recent acquisitions (Craig Smith, Sebastian Telfair, Rasual Butler) and departures (Alex Acker, Fred Jones) made his purportedly one-sided contributions (http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/pgStory?contentId=10019156#sport=NBA&photo=10015902) seem less desirable. However, Clippers head coach Mike Dunleavy Sr. may have decided that this team's crop of shooters wasn't going to make the grade without Novak when the real games started in November.
Novak's size (6-foot-10) and wingspan give him the physical attributes needed to do more than just stand behind the three-point line and wait for the ball, so with some extra effort on the defensive end, and perhaps some work in the post, Novak may develop into a more valuable player in 2009-2010.
