Winterizing your boat is one of the most importance maintenance you can perform as a boat owner. If done correctly it will extend the overall life of your boat and engine. With the weather starting to get chillier it is important to make sure your boat is ready for those cold days and nights.

Steps that should be included in your Winterizing Plan:

  1. Ensure the fuel tank is full leaving just a little bit of room for expansion.
  2. Run the engine for a bit and change the oil while it is still warm.
  3. Replace the old gear oil with fresh oil.
  4. On an outboard flush it with fresh water. Then wash down with soap and water. Disconnect the fuel hose and run the engine until it stops - it is very important to be sure all the fuel has drained from the carburettor.  Many newer engines have upgraded technology that may have different needs so be sure to check your owner's manual.
  5. If your boat will be stored out of the water disconnect your battery and store it in the garage remembering to start it up again every 30-60 days.
  6. Remove any valuable from your boat to prevent damage from extreme temperature changes and theft.
  7. Check the propeller and replace if necessary.
  8. Double-check to ensure the bilge pump is working properly.
  9. Check the stern drive and remove any plant material or barnacles.
  10.   Clean your boat thoroughly both outside and inside. The longer dirt sits on your boat the harder it will be to clean.
  11.   To prevent moisture a dehumidifier or some type of moisture absorber is key to preventing mildew. Make sure that air can circulate throughout the cabin under mattresses and seat cushions.
  12.   Empty the head and flush it out several times at a pump out station. Add approved cleaning solution and let it sit before flushing it out again.
  13.   Drain the water tanks and pump non-toxic antifreeze through the system.
  14.   Hang up coats, foul weather gear, and life jackets so they can air out and to prevent mold.
  15.   Most importantly check the owner's manual for tips and suggestions on your specific boat.

Check on your boat frequently during the winter months or even better continue to use your boat throughout the winter.  A boat used and visited frequently all year around will always be a happier boat than one left neglected for the whole winter. If you are lucky enough to have befriended some live aboards in your marina ask them to check on your boat frequently and give them a walk through so they know what to look for and what you want checked. If your boat is properly winterized it won't take nearly as much effort to be ready for spring boating season.
