Comeback Sailor Wins Gold

August 19, 7:03 PM
by Kayla Schober, Seattle Boating Examiner

With an incredible comeback in the medal race, Anna Tunnicliffe won a gold medal for the United States in the Laser Radials. In very light wind and choppy seas Anna was able to come from ninth place with only 2 legs left to finish 2nd and secure her Olympic victory. This was the first gold medal for women sailors in the Olympics since 1988.

Anna was in first place going into the medal round and needed to finish at least fourth to receive the gold medal. She had enough points in the nine preliminary races to assure at least a medal in the final race. The race didn’t start off well for her since the race committee called an individual recall for a boat over the line. As a precaution Anna and 3 other boats immediately turned back to restart the race even though it didn’t look like she was over.

Luckily Anna read a big wind shift correctly and broke away from the pack and passed six boats ahead of her.  With another gust of wind Anna passed the Australian Laser and sailed across the line in second place securing her gold medal.

The phenomenal finish was greeted by loud cheers from the U.S. fans. Gintare Volungeviciute of Lithuania won the silver after finishing the medal race in first place and Lijia Xu of China won the bronze.

Anna is only 25 years old so we should have plenty more opportunities to see her again and hopefully once again she will take center stage at the 2012 Olympics in London. With her performance the U.S. has every reason to look forward to great things from our sailing team.
