So here's how this rumor got started - Kim Master's at the Daily Beast blogged about the new deal between George Clooney and Paramount. Clooney's leaving Warner Brother's after 20 years of service. Service which included promising to never grow a day older than 40 years of age - and that his powerful man-nipples would somehow have to be restrained for Universal's biggest Batman film yet - Batman and Robin.
Clooney broke both parts of the contract. He turned 41 - it took 20 years but the age-dial finally managed to roll over a year. (it had been hanging on 40.998 since 2003) And as for his nipples? Even under three inches of reinforced titanium and midnight black latex they could never be restrained. Batman and Robin would go on to suffer commercially and critically because of Clooney's small, steely teats.
Cut to today and the announcement that Paramount wants King George - and has allegedly cut a pretty sweet deal to have him for some yet as unannounced big film project. Which is where Kim Master's conjecture as a professional film blogger went into gear - George Clooney would make a fantastic Jack Ryan! And there's no doubt that he would. Its such a grand idea I'm thinking even Paramount wishes that they thought of it. But it's still just a rumor. A rumor that will probably garner Miss Master's a hefty page-hit reward when this day of business finally concludes.
What isn't a rumor is that Paramount does indeed want to freshen' up the Jack Ryan series for a modern audience - and that they might want (gulp) Sam Raimi to do the freshening.
There are other big film franchises that Paramount could use Clooney to breathe new life into other than Tom Clancy's Ryan series. He could be used to reboot the ancient Death Wish franchise. Paramount could also update Saturday Night Fever with an older Tony Manero, played by Clooney, who is still going to discos and "getting some" even in the sunset years of the 2000 decade. The reboot threads run pretty much endless on this Paramount/Clooney wish list.
I'd give this project a 75% chance of actually happening. The film climate is perfect for more Jack Ryan - and there's no denying that George Clooney would make a mighty handsome prospect for the series. But as of right now - this a film blogger's day dream - nothing more.
