The best headline opportunity ever pretty much presented itself to the film media today - and it appears as if my fellow film blogging brothers and sisters seem soundly capable of reporting this MAJOR film news story.
Jodie Foster's new film - The Beaver - about a man who chooses to communicate through a "beaver" puppet he wears on his hand, (did it really need to be a beaver? oh yes it did) is pretty much rich soil for the headline farmers in the online community.
Check out these headlines:
Empire Magazine: "Mel Gibson UP for Jodie Foster's Beaver"
Aintitcoolnews: "Mel Gibson May Stick His Hand In Jodie Foster's BEAVER!!"
Cinemaspy: "Mel Gibson is in Jodie Foster's Beaver"
Cinemablend: "Jodie Foster helps Mel Gibson talk to the Beaver"
Obssessedwithfilm: "Mel Gibson will play with Jodie Foster's BEAVER!"
Total Film: "Mel Gibson is The Beaver"
So we get a little dirtball comedy mixed in with some charming Leave It To Beaver references. It's a sweet and sour blend. Another great June Cleaver-ism would have been "Mel, don't you think you were a little too hard on Jodie Foster's Beaver?" Or they could have taken the Naked Gun tack and had "Nice Beaver. Thanks Mel Gibson, I just had it stuffed this morning..." as another eye-grabbing headline.
For the rest of us who are willing to pooh-pooh naughty playground humor - well maybe for the rest of you - it should be noted that these two actor/directors did star in Richard Donner's 1994 film Maverick. Great film. Great team. It's just unfortunate that these two would be reunited in a film called The Beaver.
Expect Beaver Fever to hit the general public when and if the first film trailer for this movie hits a big screen. A biblical storm of giggles shall follow "THE BEAVER" movie title card as we have neither seen nor heard before this... BIBLICAL STORM.
