Check out the fresh new trailer for the 22nd Bond flick Quantum of Solace just released this week and hot off of Columbia's marketing stoves:
Trailer Critique: Let's get one thing straight, though I liked Casino Royale, I didn't love it. Don't get me wrong, Danny Craig is terrific as the latest manifestation of James Bond. I liked that they put 20 more pounds of muscle into a character that since the Sean Connery era has been a bit lank and... I don't want to say girly, but I will say nymphish. Craig brought back the muscle to go with the hustle. It's just too bad Casino Royale wasn't the movie to capitalize on that.
When Casino Royale was released I still had fairly clear memories of Pierce Brosnan's first Bond film Goldeneye, (Brosnan made for a great nymphish Bond) and between the two I still believe that Goldeneye was, and still is, the best Bond debut ever. As of today I'm still sort of half in bed with the James Bond series. The movies are mostly fun, and harmless, and they're appeasing films. But times have changed. Newer, tougher "secret agent" movies have been released, and Bond, though he's still charming as all hell, has lacked the intensity and the ferocity of something like a Jason Bourne. (or dare I say it... Ethan Hunt...? no I dare not...) But that's neither here nor there nor anywhere near relevant. What is relevant is that the first trailer for Quantum of Solace sparked my interest in James Bond again. This second trailer makes me want to throw on a tuxedo, march down to the Seattle Cinerama, and be the first overdressed 007-nerd in line for this movie still two months away. Quantum of Solace trailer 2 is, simply put, ovation worthy.
I felt that Casino Royale's biggest hindrance was that for an action film, it felt a bit muted. When I heard Marc Forster, (Stranger than Fiction, Finding Neverland) was directing Bond 22 I sort of figured we'd be getting a smart, well put together Bond film, but another movie that was all talk and no walk. (not the word I wanted to use, but walk still works) Watch the last 45 seconds of this trailer and tell me if you didn't get a bit buzzed on the spectacle of action on display. Could they pack more whup-ass into 45 seconds? Scaffolding fights, dogfights, car chases, motorcycle jumps, boat wrecks, lots of explosions and half naked females, I know this might make me sound like Number One American Male Dipsh!t, but I like that kind of thing. In a James Bond movie I absolutely adore it. Like I stated earlier, till today I've been half in bed with this new Bond series... But now, just like 10,000 buxom young women before me, I'm in bed with the guy. And I'm totally fine with that. Excited about it actually. Admitting that makes me feel... I don't know... Nymphish?
