Five months ago Jaume Balagueró, a Spanish horror film Director who many feel has always been on the cusp of a great horror flick, (he's Directed The Nameless, The Darkness, and the semi-creepy Fragile) finally released the film [REC] in the United Kingdom. The film caught the horror community with it's pants down. Word spread quickly, people that had seen it praised it online. Buzz hasn't been this strong about a horror movie since The Descent premiered in 2005. American production companies aren't about to let an original idea run amok without getting tackled, stripped, skinned and replicated for the popcorn dealers back here in the States.
Which is exactly what Sony Pictures did. They slammed together a lean shooting schedule, (I'm thinking two weeks) nabbed newboy film Director John Erick Dowdle, (John Directed The Poughkeepsie Tapes.... Never heard of it? Consider yourself fortunate...) slapped 12 extra minutes on to the original's lean 75 minute running time, and shot, produced, and delivered a sure-fire Halloween million-dollar winner in the time it takes to order and receive a new Toyota Prius.
As for myself I just got my [REC] Region 2 DVD in from Amazon UK, so there's no way in bleedin' hell I'm going to see Quarantine this weekend. I'm an OG when it comes to horror movies. I haven't seen [REC] yet, I am having a bunch of friends over in a few weeks to finally watch the film with me, (I did the same thing with The Descent, Frit Vilt, Creep, Severance, Fragile and 28 Days Later months before they were released Stateside) and I want to see the flick with an audience. How do I play these DVD's at home you might ask? I'm a movie nerd people, I own a Region Free DVD Player. It's amazing all the cool horror movies you get to see before everyone in America just because you have access to Amazon.com and your DVD player's as loose as a tavern wench, taking anything home.
