The Christian triathlete - lesson number 3 - If you see a shark, pray they aren't hungry and get out of the water.
My son is/was a national class swimmer. He won the national championship for 200 yard freestyle for junior colleges when he was a freshman. You can look it up.
My brother lives on the Ohio River. One day my son was visiting his uncle and decided to swim across the Ohio River and back. After which, he called me to tell me about his feat. After my anger subsided, after I read him the riot act, after my fury dissipated, I explained to him that people who think they are stronger than the Ohio River are the ones who drown. I still get chills thinking what phone call I might have received.
Triathletes can be a cocky bunch. I mean, we can swim, bike AND run. Long distances, too. And all three of them in one day. Over long distances, too. We are dudes.
Yeah, but we can't outswim a shark. It won't happen. The shark will win. And chances are the shark will not pray before his/her meal either.
The Christian can think s/he is too mature in the faith for the Devil to win against them. Not so. If we resist the Devil he will win flee from us. However, if the Christian decides to go swimming with him because of their own misplaced sense of strength and self confidence, chances are dinner will be served and the Christian will be the main course.
1 Peter 5:7-9 applies.
