Astronomers at the University of Manchester’s Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics found the files while researching materials for the 40th anniversary of the moon landing.
The recordings cover events from July 19 through July 21, 1969.
The Luna 15 dramatically changed its orbit once the U.S. astronauts landed on the lunar surface in order to get closer to the Apollo 11 landing site.
The read drama begins on July 21 - “a rumor from a well-informed source in Moscow that this Luna is going to land this evening” — then go home to the Soviet Union with some lunar rock samples.
At 15:50 on July 21, as the astronomers listened the Luna 15 crashed into the moon’s surface.
Voices from the control room sais, “It’s landing” and “It’s going down much too fast!”
Near the end of the tape: “I say, this has really been drama of the highest order.”
Somebody else 'out there' is listening, too.
